This story is about some of the special features of Matavera, that the younger generation of New Zealand-born Cook Islanders do not know. “Matavera” was named after an incident that occurred when Tuakeu opened the umu and the hot steam burnt Tangiia’s eyes. So Tangiia named this village “Matavera”.
